Canaan is, with Norfolk, the northernmost town in the Northwest Corner, on the Massachusetts border. Unlike Norfolk, it is a bustling center of commerce. More small (and large) businesses make their homes in Canaan than in most other Northwest Corner towns. A small sampling: Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, SJ Masters Tile Shop, and the Becton Dickinson manufacturing plant. Nevertheless, the town still harbors a village feel and manages to support several working farms and a major 4-H club. It is the only Northwest Corner town with a McDonald's, but it is also home to Freund's Farm Market, one of the most extensive and popular farm markets in the area. Canaan is in the midst of an overhaul of its town plan and is currently assessing its zoning laws and the direction of its downtown, with an emphasis on beautification. A Super Stop 'n Shop anchors a small shopping center.
Still, Canaan remains a town of passionate volunteers, where fathers and sons are often on the fire squad, and seemingly everybody knows your name. Here is a town where village streets of small, tidy houses give way to bigger estates tucked away in the East Canaan and Canaan Valley sections of town. On one side of town, the Housatonic flows lazily through; on the other, The Blackberry River is the site of picnic areas, waterfalls and Connecticut's only designated industrial monument, the Beckley Furnace, an historic blast furnace. The town has public tennis courts, a town pool and golfing at the Canaan Country Club (public invited). The Northwest YMCA, housed at the Geer Adult Independent Living Centre, offers an indoor pool, fitness center and recreation classes.
