Salisbury, the largest town in the Northwest Corner, includes the village of Lakeville, as well as the hamlets of Lime Rock, Taconic and Amesville. While each area has its charms and advantages, overall it is a town marked by lovely homes, many historic, beautiful vistas and a small-town atmosphere. Along with that small town feeling, however, comes a sophistication, the equal of any area in the U.S. While many Salisbury residents are locally born and bred, or have spent generations of summers here, many are transplants or retirees from New York City, Boston and beyond. That influence, and the fact that either city is within a couple of hours' drive, lends a crucial cultural, educational and political liveliness to the town.
Salisbury has the best of both worlds: a rural lifestyle, with cultural and educational riches within easy reach. The Hotchkiss School runs a year-round program of music, dance and theater open to the community. Some of the sports facilities at The Hotchkiss School are also available for the use of residents of the town. The village of Lakeville includes three art galleries, which team with the Tremaine Gallery at Hotchkiss to stage a monthly gallery evening, with mini buses running among them. The Salisbury Congregational Church and Trinity Episcopal Church offer fine music programs; Crescendo is a group dedicated to bringing quality choral music to the area.
Salisbury's Scoville Memorial Library, the oldest private library in the nation, offers children's and adult programs and is the home of the Salisbury Band and the Taconic Learning Center, a continuing education program for adults. It is also a co-sponsor, with the Hotchkiss and Salisbury schools, of the Salisbury Forum, which brings expert and often famous speakers to the town for an evening of discussion on subjects ranging from the media to global warming to the Constitution.
The town boasts an excellent primary and middle school, Salisbury Central, with a host of nearby independent alternatives, including The Hotchkiss School and Salisbury School (9-12) and Indian Mountain School (pre-K-9). The area's high school, Housatonic Valley Regional High School, offers an honors program and prize-winning robotics, environment, debate, jazz and doo-wop groups, and a special musical theatre program, as well as a comprehensive, competitive athletics program.
The town offers year-round recreation - swimming, boating, hiking, golf, tennis, riding, skiing and skating. Salisbury is bordered by the beautiful Housatonic River and boasts several lovely lakes: Mt. Riga Lake, Lake Wononscopomuc (Lakeville Lake) and Twin Lakes, as well as numerous ponds, a town beach and marina. Hiking trails, including the Appalachian Trail, abound; residents golf and play tennis at Hotchkiss and also play tennis at town courts or the private Twin Lakes Beach Club. Indoor swimming and skating are available at The Hotchkiss and Salisbury schools. The famous Salisbury ski jumps are held in February and residents play paddle tennis at the new town courts overlooking the lake. For sportscar fans, Lime Rock Park is one of the finest small raceways in the country.
If your tastes run more to indoor sports, of the eating and shopping variety, Salisbury is in the midst of wonderful restaurants, its own and others nearby. Local inns with restaurants include The White Hart and the Interlaken. See our guide for links to area dining and lodging establishments.
Salisbury and Lakeville's main streets have a clutch of charming stores offering clothing and jewelry, freshly baked delicacies, antiques, rare books, home goods and furniture. But the two villages also offer practical services, incuding LaBonne's full service grocery, a pharmacy, newsstand, hardware store, liquor stores, coffee shop, pet supply shop, florist, dry cleaner, picture framer, gas station, and car repair shops.
